Revolutionary Girl Utena
Adolescence Rush

Overall Review...

Reviewed Copy: Ever Anime (bootleg)
Printed: originally 1999

I wish I owned the legit release... -_-;;

The movie was CRAAAAZY, but a treasure for many yuri fans ^_^. This is one of those few soundtracks I really really noticed, though, while watching the movie. I know music will usually create the mood, but in this movie it was VERY apparent. So I bought the soundtrack (a bootleg... I knew so little back then) and was quite pleased to find some of the most interesting piano arrangements I'd heard in a while.

The music feels very... not Japanese. I suppose it's going for the whole European effect, and some of the techno moments remind me of crappy indie techno. But the piano is wonderful! And the tracks are all full tracks, not like many movie soundtracks where they only last half a minute and there's like forty of 'em. No, this is a solid soundtrack.

If you liked the TV Utena music, you MUST buy this. It's kind of like a "best of" album for TV BGM; many favorites are mixed together or rearranged slightly, and even the opening theme gets a make-over. An eight minute make-over... Masami Okui fans will want to grab the love song "Toki Ni Ai Wa" for sure.

Name: "Rose Is Rain -Bararan Sosei-roku-"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

The opening BGM for the movie. It worked really well in the movie, with all the credits and all. It sounds a lot like battle music, but I think it's a good mood setter for the movie.

Grade: B

Name: "Scarlet-tachi No Butou ~ Saikai"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

Used to show the school. The CRAAAAZY school with ugly uniforms. This is pretty nice, obviously inspired by the TV BGM (though it feels "bigger" here). Toward the end it goes into a brief bit of "Hikari Sasu Niwa", one of the gentler melodies from the TV show.

Grade: B+

Name: "Bara No Kokuin ~ Kuuchuu Teien No Hanayome"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

A very very cool piece. The intro makes me feel like I'm drowning for some reason... I think it was used when Utena was searching for Touga. I just really love this; it's mysterious and feels a bit anxious. Then it settles down a bit, we get one of those piano-type instruments (forgot what they're called...) and it sounds like everything is all better now.

Grade: A+

Name: "Duelist ~ Yomigaere! Mukyuu No Rekishi "Chuusei" Yo"
Artist: Tokyo Konsei Gasshodan, Suginami Jidou Gasshodan, and Maki Kamiya
Type: vocal

This was played during Utena's very first battle with Saionji/Saiyonji (can't remember how you spell his name). The lyrics are bizarre and the singing goofy.

Grade: C+

Name: "Illusion ~ Akui No Sanagi"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

A lovely piano piece. Very calming... can't remember when this was used... maybe when Touga was thinking about daddy rape while he painted Shiori's toenails... or maybe I'm combining scenes. The piano becomes a very cool sort of techno-ish song that's a bit eerie-anxious. No, yeah, this is the sodomy scene. Then the bed sheet butterfly. I tell ya, this was a fantastic movie.

Grade: A

Name: "Belladonna No Wana"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

The super cool piano tune played when shit's goin' down. I love love love this... it always manages to send shivers down my spine. One of the highlights of the album, though it's not really a new track; the TV show had a very similar theme, but this version is just EXCELLENT. I think Utena was looking for Touga again... or learning about Anthy's secrets... I don't remember.

Grade: A+

Name: "Toki Ni Ai Wa"
Artist: Masami Okui
Type: vocal

The very romantic insert song where Anthy abd Utena dance across the water and roses. This is pretty much the yuri theme song... Masami Okui has a lovely voice, but you don't hear her do love songs like this very often. She also wrote the words for this. I didn't like this song nearly as much as I do now until I saw the movie.

Grade: A

Name: "Akio Enbukyoku ~ Video Na Kioku"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

The amusing BGM played when the shadow girls were discussing Akio. I love Akio, he's pretty much my favorite character from Utena. Such an evil horndog. This sounds a bit like a sped-up French waltz.

Grade: B+

Name: "Bara No Rashin ~ Shura -Nikutai Seiza Alpha Psi Zeta Seiun-"
Artist: Tokyo Konsei Gasshodan, Suginami Jidou Gasshodan, and Maki Kamiya
Type: vocal

And yet ANOTHE poopie battle song. This is the one used for Utena's battle with Juri. I find these songs distracting and ridiculous, though after a while it became a very casual joke with a friend of mine. Just try to sing along with them. Gah, it just keeps going! I hate these.

Grade: C-

Name: "Abraxes ~ Hikari Sasu Niwa"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

This was used when Utena was following the arrows to find Touga, methinks. And then she finds him, they discuss their youth (enter the "Hikaru Sasu Niwa" tune), and here comes the BUBBLES! This is a very bubbly tune. A lot of the piano songs for Utena sound like you're drowning... or maybe it's just me.

Grade: A

Name: "Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku -Adolescence Of Utena-"
Artist: Tokyo Konsei Gasshodan, Kunihiko Ikuhara, and Hideto Amari
Type: vocal

Heh... the movie version of the famous famous TV duel song. Something I find very funny about this is the co-creator, Kunihiko Ikuhara, is credited as singing this. Heh heh. This is about the only version of the song I kinda like. I think just because I laughed at it so many times and Utena's going through the Car Wash of Doom... no Utena! You'll turn into a car if you do that! Drive, Anthy, drive! Heh, check out the ending of this. Weird.

Grade: B-

Name: "Kessen ~ Beelzebub No Oujou"
Artist: N/A
Type: BGM

Step on it, Anthy! We've gotta drive Utena past the castle! Oh no! Shiori on your right! Okay, no problem... Utena's engine is still going strong... holy crap, get outta the way, Akio! No! You're my brother, you can have sex with me... it's okay... What? You want to try to stop me? You can't do that! I'll drive through you! Yay! We win! Naked make-out scene on the remains of the Utena car! The end.

Name: "Rond-Revolution ~ Adolescence Rush"
Artist: Masami Okui
Type: vocal/remix

Or maybe this is the music played while their driving... oh, I can't remember. This is the looong movie remake of the super awesome TV opening theme. I love that song, and I like this, but it's not as good as the original. Of course, it was hella cool to hear it in the movie (whichever part I heard it in). After the main part of the song we get a semi-techno beat with Masami Okui scatting. Heh heh... scatting... Then it goes into a more rock beat and we finish with the grand opera celebration.

Grade: A-

Name: "Fiance Ni Naritai -Symphonic Instrument-"
Artist: N/A
Type: instrumental

The ending theme was actually sung by... well, I can't remember, but he had a whiney voice and I didn't like it too much. The symphonic version is much better in my opinion.

Grade: B+
