Tenchi Muyo!
Tenchi Muyo!

Overall Review...

Reviewed Copy: Pioneer (PICA-1122)
Printed: ?/?/2001 (U.S. release only)

I think fans of Tenchi Muyo! will agree that the dubbed songs were definitely some of the better dubs out there. Pioneer has released several CDs where you can buy full versions of these dubbed tunes, but at last they've released a COMPLETE (minus one song) collection of said songs.

The songs are from all the Tenchi series as well as the Pretty Sammy spin-offs, so there's some variety as far as that goes. Something that annoyed me was how they didn't credit all their singers, and I think I remember seeing several goof-ups on the lyrics, but that's okay. At least I've got English versions of "Boku Wa Motto Pioneer" and "Baka" ^_^

The only song missing from this collection is the dubbed TV opening theme sung by Sonia, who actually sang the original Japanese version as well. My guess is there was a rights problem or something, since the TV ending made it here. That song is available on an out-of-print Pioneer CD, though, so if you really want it you can get it. If you don't really care, this is a decent CD to own, especially for people who like anime but get frustrated because they can't understand it.

Name: "I'm A Pioneer"
Artist: Sharyn Scott
Type: opening

The OAV 2 opening theme, originally sung by Chisa Yokoyama. Let me tell you... I love Chisa, but she did a BAD job! So when I heard this I went "Yes, that's how it SHOULD be sung!" and love it. I tell ya, this gets me going sometimes. I think it's one of the best dubbed songs out there, with fun music and words of encouragement to get you pumped to do whatever it is you do. I can't help but love this classic.

Grade: A+

Name: "Dream Away"
Artist: Sharyn Scott
Type: opening

This is actually not from Tenchi Muyo!, but rather its spin-off series Pretty Sammy. This is the TV opening dubbed, with Sharyn Scott singing. Not my favorite work by her, but I don't think I'd want to hear this done by anyone else.

Grade: B+

Name: "Washu's Lullaby"
Artist: Scottie Haskell
Type: vocal

This is from OAV 2 when Washu was babysitting that baby... I think it was Tenchi's cousin or something. Man that was an ugly baby. This is okay, but I don't like the music much. No problem with the singer really, but she doesn't sound like Washu at all, and this is SUPPOSED to be her song. Well, I guess it wouldn't have that sweet feeling with her dubbed voice actress... ha, she was a good Washu though.

Name: "Sleeping Beauty On The Balcony"
Artist: Ellen Gerstell
Type: vocal

A dubbed Mihoshi image song, I was actually rather pleased to find Mihoshi's dubbed voice actress sings this. I love when dub studios do that for image songs; it helps sound more like it was meant for the character. This is pretty cute and though I don't like some parts of it, overall I'm pretty happy. Mostly because I like Mihoshi's voice actress ^_^

Grade: B

Name: "Pretty Sammy The Magical Girl"
Artist: Sherry Lynn
Type: ending

Like the above song, this is also a character song sung by the character's dub voice actress. Sasami sings as the magic girl Pretty Sammy, and it's fun, though I'm not so much a Sasami fan. This was the ending to the Mihoshi Special OAV, I think. It's cute, reflecting the farcicle (did I make up a word?) nature of the show saying Sasami will even do your office work for you, if you're too tired. Hey, I'll get you a glass of water if your thirsty! That's a good magical girl. I wasn't particularly a fan of the original song, but I think the dub actress does a pretty decent job, so it's not her fault.

Name: "Your Hiroshi"
Artist: Diane Michelle
Type: ending

My favorite Diane Michelle song ever, this was I think an ending theme to some Pretty Sammy thing... maybe an OAV... oh well. This was a song for Chihiro, Sasami's crazy mom in her series. It's hillarious... this woman is singing about how her husband left her-- not for another woman, no no... it had to be for a MAN! She laments his decision, saying she can't get over it and just buy them sweaters at Christmas time. "I don't know why you need a guy!" she angrily declares. I do prefer this over the original, which was sung by Rika Matsumoto, only because of the lyrics.

Name: "Money No More"
Artist: Sharyn Scott
Type: ending

I think this is the dubbed Pretty Sammy TV ending. What amazes me is how Sharyn Scott immitates Chisa Yokoyama's voice. She does some things with her voice and it's as though this is the English Chisa Yokoyama. Probably only hardcore seiyuu fans would pick them up. I really love this song. I'm not sure why, it might just be its easy-going beat or vocals, but I like it quite a bit. My favorite Pretty Sammy song that Chisa Yokoyama ever sang.

Grade: A

Name: "The Lonely Moon"
Artist: Scottie Haskell
Type: ending

The OAV 2 ending. This was originally sung by Ryoko's seiyuu, but now it's sung by Scottie Haskell. Better than Diane Michelle singing this, that's for sure... I think Scottie Haskell sounds okay on this. My favorite dubbed Tenchi Muyo singer is still Sharyn Scott, though ^_^;;

Grade: B

Name: "Talent For Love"
Artist: Sharyn Scott
Type: ending

Yay! Happy fun song! The OAV ending theme with Ryououki and that carrot she planted. It was sooo cute! This is a really fun song, and one of the few Tenchi songs I PREFER dubbed. Sharyn Scott has a really nice voice for these songs.

Name: "Tenchi Muyo! Ryououki No Theme"
Artist: N/A
Type: opening

Ah, the super famous Tenchi Muyo! OAV opening. It's all instrumental, incorporating traditional and techno elements rather successfully, I'd say. It sounds like shogun-era Japan... in OUTER SPACE!!! The show used two versions of this, one being a slightly different remix. I think this is the original... I think...

Grade: A

Name: "Dimension Of Love"
Artist: Diane Michelle
Type: vocal

The synthesized music at the beginning is pretty fun... but wow, I hate her voice. It sounds like me singing ^_^;; I think this was played at the end of the TV series when Ryoko and Tenchi were together. It's supposed to be a Ryoko song, but I think it was also used as the final TV ending. I can't remember for sure, so I just put it as a "vocal". The chorus makes me hurt.

Grade: C

Name: "Up-Walk In Galaxy"
Artist: Diane Michelle
Type: ending

The usual TV ending. This is a song between Ryoko and Aeka, and I was actually somewhat impressed with Diane Michelle on this. She plays both girls and sings with two clearly different voices. Good show. The lyrics are pretty fun... the ending sequence animation would change each episode according to which girl was singing. I actually kinda like her Aeka voice, but sadly she rarely uses it.

Grade: B

Name: "Forevermore"
Artist: Diane Michelle
Type: vocal

A dubbed Ryoko song I think from the episode where she and Tenchi were in her fantasy world as gangsters. That was a nice episode, but this is not a nice song. I skip it everytime. Don't like Diane Michelle's vocals here, but the song itself is also pretty boring.
