Chisa Yokoyama
Chisa And The Heaven & Earth Band Live In L.A.

Overall Review...

Reviewed Copy: Pioneer (PICD-1003A)
Printed: ?/?/1997

Chisa Yokoyama, the voice of Sasami, live in LA. This is out of print, which is just as well because it's not a terribly good album.

Chisa Yokoyama makes her singing debut in America with this LIVE album. I was on a strange Yokoyama kick when I bought this (strange because this was before my Sakura Wars fandom), and I remember this album quickly pulled me out of it. She doesn't sound NEARLY as good live here as she does in her SW live performances. I've seen her live, she's fantastic. But here... no. I can't even imagine people wanting to go to this concert. I don't know why they even held it. I guess this was back when I was just getting into the fandom and didn't realize just how important Tenchi Muyo! was to anime in America. Oh well. We've got Yokoyama-san, but we also have Sharyn Scott, who does a lot of the dubbed songs. She's pretty good and sorta saves the album in some ways. The band they have playing sounds like ass, and what's funny is they have little instrumental "let Chisa breathe for a minute" segments that are so insignificant they don't even have real names. Except for "Poor Boy Dreams". I don't know why.

I rarely ever listen to this album, though I will say I like it a whole lot more than I used to. It's out of print and kinda rare, so I wouldn't even really say it's worth looking for. I gave it a B-, I think I must have taken pitty on the CD... I was really kind with these reviews. Sorry, Chisa.

You won't even recognize this at first. The Heaven & Earth band kinda sucks. Well... no, I won't say THEY suck, but whoever arranged the music for them sucked pretty bad. I can listen to this sometimes, but when I sit and think "This is supposed to be the opening for the Tenchi OAV", I get a little depressed.

Name: "Boku Wa Motto Pioneer"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama

Again, boo to the musical arrangement. This is the first song Yokoyama-san sings for the concert, and you can tell because she's not worn out yet. She sings this more energetically than she originally sang the opening, so I do like her performance in a way. The crap-job music brings this down, though. But really, I never liked the Japanese version as much as I liked the dubbed version. This is the 2nd Tenchi OAV opening.

Name: "Yumemireba Yume Mo Yume Ja Nai"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama
Type: opening/cover

I think this is the TV opening for the Pretty Sammy / Pretty Sami / Pretty Samy (there are so many ways to spell it -_-) series. Uh-oh, she's starting to get tired... she still does a decent job of singing this. It's odd to hear this without Ryououki in the background going "MYAAN!" or whatever. Breathe, Chisa, breathe!

Grade: B-

Name: "Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sami"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama
Type: ending/live

Whoa, Yokoyama-san sounds exhausted... I think she did this concert before she started doing Sakura Wars shows because she's having some trouble... heh, she got used to running around while singing : D Here the band doesn't sound like shit, though, which is nice. There is absolutley no energy in this song, though, and that brings the rating down a bit.

Name: "Talent For Love"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama and Sharyn Scott
Type: ending/live

HAHAHA! Yes. Yokoyama-san sings the UGLIEST Engrish I've ever heard! Her and Sharyn Scott, the woman who sings many of the dubbed songs from TM, sing this together entirely in English. Ms. Scott sounds fine, of course, but poor Yokoyama-san...

Grade: B-

Name: "Crazy For You"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama
Type: vocal/cover/live

Well sure, of course Chisa Yokoyama would cover a MADONNA song. Why wouldn't she? I used to hate hate HATE this track (though her Engrish is much improved), but now I think it's kinda cute. Kinda.

Name: "Tenchi Muyo! TV Series Theme"
Artist: Sharyn Scott
Type: vocal/cover

Arguably the strongest track on the CD. Ms. Scott has a strong voice and rarely falters, and this was a much needed track on the album. Chisa needed a break. This is the first time the dubbed song was actually sung by an English speaker. I've always liked this song, and I'm glad I finally get to hear Ms. Scott give it a go : D

Grade: B+

Name: "Baka"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama
Type: ending/live

One of the PS endings, and another of my favorites on the album. Yokoyama-san's had her break, she's back to do an easy song, and she sings it fairly well, all things considered. The original is still a hundred times better but, you know... for this album, it's good. I think she's singing this a little faster than the original...

Grade: B

Name: "Renai No Saikou"
Artist: Chisa Yokoyama
Type: ending/live

The original Tenchi OAV ending, live. She's a tired girl. This is another of the songs I thought sounded better in the dubbed version... she's no longer even trying to sing in her Sasami voice.

Grade: C+

Name: "I'm A Pioneer" (reprise)
Artist: Sharyn Scott and Chisa Yokoyama
Type: opening/live

The grand finale. Heh. More Engrish by Yokoyama-san, but at least Ms. Scott's jumped in and salvaged some hope for the track. The audience responds more to Sharyn Scott then the girl who the concert was originally for in the first place @_@ This is kind of fun, and Yokoyama-san sounds better here than she did on the other one. A pretty decent ending for this CD. At the end Yokoyama-san speaks a little English to the audience ^_^
